Read: The Trial Route
Mina had spent three weeks designing a shorter walking route between the school and the library. On her map, the new route saved nearly four minutes. Ben pointed to the narrow stretch beside the community garden. "At dismissal, that path gets crowded," he said. Mina tapped her stopwatch record. Her measurements were precise, and she was reluctant to postpone the presentation.
Nevertheless, she agreed to a second trial. This time they walked at dismissal with a parent pushing a stroller and a student using crutches. At the garden entrance, two groups met beside a parked delivery cart. No one could pass comfortably. The group waited while the driver moved the cart, and the four-minute advantage vanished.
Mina’s first impulse was to describe the delay as unusual. Ben asked whether she knew how often deliveries arrived. She did not. For the next week, they recorded conditions without identifying individual walkers. They found that the cart appeared on three afternoons, while crowding occurred every day.
At the meeting, Mina displayed both her original results and the later observations. She recommended keeping the wider route until the narrow section could be improved. A committee member asked whether this meant the project had failed. Mina looked at the neat line on her first map. "The first answer changed," she said. "The question became better."
Afterward, Ben suggested using their notes to propose a marked delivery area. Mina opened a fresh page. She still cared about saving time, but she now understood that a route could be efficient for one walker and difficult for another.
