Read: The Empty Display Case
The school exhibition opened in two days, and Mina’s display case was empty. She had promised a collection of old neighborhood photographs, but only one family had replied. "I have asked a million people," she told Ben. The unopened envelopes on her desk seemed to watch her.
Ben read the invitation. It asked families to lend original photographs for a month. "My grandmother might worry about losing hers," he said. Mina had treated silence as a lack of interest. Now she wondered whether the request itself was the obstacle. Together they wrote a new invitation: families could bring photographs to be scanned and take the originals home immediately. Every copy would identify its owner, and no image would be displayed without permission.
On Friday, three neighbors arrived with envelopes. One brought a photograph of the school before the playground existed. Another explained that the building behind a market stall had been a cinema. Mina wrote down their explanations instead of guessing from the images.
The display case was not crowded when the exhibition opened. There were six carefully labeled copies and a space inviting more contributions. Mina left the space empty on purpose. Ben asked whether she still wanted to fill every inch. "Not if it means getting the stories wrong," she said.
