Big Idea
Sort important information into a useful organizer such as a sequence, comparison chart, or problem-and-solution map.
Read: The Unfinished Map
Mina spread her map across the club table. Every path in the neighborhood park was drawn in careful green lines. Ben studied the bridge symbol. "Is that crossing open?" he asked. Mina remembered a loose board there, but she had not checked it this week. "It was open before," she replied. She wanted the map ready for Saturday’s walk.
The next afternoon they visited the park. A barrier blocked the bridge, and a sign directed visitors toward a longer path. Mina’s face grew warm. Her beautiful map would have sent the group to a closed crossing. Ben offered her an eraser, but she shook her head. Instead, she drew the barrier and added the safe route. At the bottom she wrote the date they had checked the paths.
On Saturday a younger child asked why the map had a date. Mina explained that places can change. She was prouder of that small line of writing than of the perfectly straight border she had spent an hour drawing.
