Grade 3: Multi-Step Mixed Challenges
These original challenges combine several skills in one story. Record intermediate results, include units, draw a model or route when useful, and check the final result. Teachers can reveal answers using the existing hidden-answer controls.
Picnic supplies
A group has 5 boxes with 8 sandwiches each. It reserves 1/4 of all sandwiches for helpers. It shares the rest equally among 6 picnic tables. Each table has 4 pupils.
- How many sandwiches are there in all?
- How many are reserved, and how many remain for tables?
- How many sandwiches go to each table?
- If every pupil at a table gets one whole sandwich, what fraction of that tableโs sandwiches remains?
- How many sandwiches remain across all tables after pupils eat? Check using a second method.
Garden border
A rectangular garden is 9 m long and 4 m wide. A 2 m opening is left for a gate. Border strips come in lengths of 3 m; strips can be cut and unused pieces can be joined.
- Find the perimeter.
- How much border is needed after leaving the opening?
- How many strips should you buy?
- The garden is widened by 2 m. Find the new perimeter and border length.
- How many strips are needed now, and how much is left over?
