Read: The Quiet Rehearsal
Mina had practiced her lines for the school play until she could say them without looking. Yet at rehearsal she could barely speak. The empty chairs seemed like a crowd waiting for her to fail. Ben noticed her twisting the corner of her script. "Say the first line just to me," he suggested. Mina tried. Her voice was soft but steady. Ben moved back one step, then another. After several tries, Mina could reach the back row. On performance night, a chair scraped loudly during her first sentence. Mina paused. She found Ben beside the curtain and imagined she was speaking only to him. Her next line carried across the room. She was still nervous, but she no longer needed to wait for the nervous feeling to disappear.
