015 A Physical Map of Arizona
👩🏫 Teacher’s Guide
Objective
Read geographic evidence and distinguish natural features from human-made boundaries.
Vocabulary
physical map, landform, coast
Suggested time
30-40 minutes, with optional practice across the week.
Teaching Notes
- Model one question by naming the relevant row, label, or statement. Have students explain the evidence for a second answer before working independently.
- Introduce the study resource before assigning questions. Students can answer using this lesson without opening the source book.
- Use questions 1-4 for guided practice and the remaining questions for independent practice or discussion. Open responses may use different wording if the evidence supports them.
- Check the activity against its stated constraints and the answer bank. Revisit a missed concept before adding a new one.
🧒 Student Worksheet
Concept and Helping Material
Arizona includes deserts, mountains, and deep canyons. The Colorado River helped carve the Grand Canyon over a very long time. A desert receives little precipitation; it is not simply a place with sand.
Study Resource: Arizona
| Feature | Location | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Canyon | northern Arizona | canyon |
| Colorado River | part of western boundary | river |
| Sonoran Desert | southern Arizona | desert |
| Colorado Plateau | northern Arizona | plateau |
Further thinking: Use the passage and resource together to answer the comparison questions. A map or table leaves out some information; explain what else you would need before using it for a real decision.

In the Arizona table, what is listed under Location for Colorado River?
In the Arizona table, what is listed under Location for Sonoran Desert?
In the Arizona table, what is listed under Location for Colorado Plateau?
How does the Arizona table classify the entry Grand Canyon - northern Arizona?
How does the Arizona table classify the entry Colorado River - part of western boundary?
Would a physical map or a street map be more useful for comparing mountains and plains?
Does a table of four features show every natural feature in this place?
What location evidence would you use to label Grand Canyon on a sketch?
Can these location descriptions determine exact elevations or distances? Why?
Which lesson word means "a map showing natural features"?
Which lesson word means "a natural shape on Earth's land surface"?
Which lesson word means "the place where land meets the sea"?
Hands-On Experiment or Activities
What You Need: Paper, pencil, and colored pencils.
What You Do:
- Make a labeled diagram using all four entries. Use a different symbol for each type. Add a title and a key. Mark it "schematic, not to scale"; use the location words rather than guessing exact borders.
- Exchange diagrams. Check that all four labels agree with the evidence table.
- Revise one part of your work after checking it against the lesson evidence.
Think and Talk: What evidence supports one choice in your work?
Reflection
- Which idea can you explain now?
- What would you still need to learn about a real place?
Teacher Check
Check accurate use of the study resource, correct vocabulary or units, and a reason supported by evidence. For open activities, accept more than one result when it follows the instructions. The companion CSV contains the same numbered Q&A bank shown above.
