026 A Desert Habitat
👩🏫 Teacher’s Guide
Objective
Read geographic evidence and distinguish natural features from human-made boundaries.
Vocabulary
habitat, adaptation, ecosystem
Suggested time
20-30 minutes, with optional practice across the week.
Teaching Notes
- Read the short passage aloud. Point to each label or number as children follow. Accept an oral answer or a labeled drawing before asking for a sentence.
- Introduce the study resource before assigning questions. Students can answer using this lesson without opening the source book.
- Use questions 1-4 for guided practice and the remaining questions for independent practice or discussion. Open responses may use different wording if the evidence supports them.
- Check the activity against its stated constraints and the answer bank. Revisit a missed concept before adding a new one.
🧒 Student Worksheet
Concept and Helping Material
A desert receives very little precipitation. Some deserts are hot and some are cold. Plants and animals need ways to obtain or save water. A habitat supplies food, water, shelter, and space. Not every desert contains the same species.
Study Resource: Desert habitat
| Feature | Role or description | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Low rainfall | water is limited | physical condition |
| Burrow | shelter from surface heat | animal shelter |
| Water-storing stem | stores water in some desert plants | plant adaptation |
| Night activity | avoids some daytime heat | animal behavior |
Further thinking: Say where you found your answer. You can point to a row or read a sentence from the passage.
Vocabulary and Definition

🧪 Think & Respond Q&A
In the Desert habitat table, what is listed under Role or description for Low rainfall?
In the Desert habitat table, what is listed under Role or description for Burrow?
In the Desert habitat table, what is listed under Role or description for Water-storing stem?
In the Desert habitat table, what is listed under Role or description for Night activity?
How does the Desert habitat table classify the entry Low rainfall - water is limited?
How does the Desert habitat table classify the entry Burrow - shelter from surface heat?
Why is a habitat more than a place to sleep?
Would removing vegetation affect only plants? Explain.
How can being active at night help some desert animals?
Does a water-storing plant stem prove that every desert plant has the same adaptation?
Which lesson word means "a place that supplies the needs of a living thing"?
Which lesson word means "a characteristic that helps an organism survive and reproduce"?
Which lesson word means "living things interacting with each other and their environment"?
Hands-On Experiment or Activities
What You Need: Paper, pencil, and colored pencils.
What You Do:
- Make a labeled diagram using all four entries. Use a different symbol for each type. Add a title and a key. Mark it "schematic, not to scale"; use the location words rather than guessing exact borders.
- Exchange diagrams. Check that all four labels agree with the evidence table.
- Revise one part of your work after checking it against the lesson evidence.
Think and Talk: What evidence supports one choice in your work?
Reflection
- Which idea can you explain now?
- What would you still need to learn about a real place?
Teacher Check
Check accurate use of the study resource, correct vocabulary or units, and a reason supported by evidence. For open activities, accept more than one result when it follows the instructions. The companion CSV contains the same numbered Q&A bank shown above.
