Concept and Helping Material
Big Idea
Read for meaning. Identify the topic, connect details, and use evidence to answer questions.
Read
A map makes a large place small enough to see on paper. A key explains symbols. A scale shows how a map distance relates to a real distance. On our practice map, one centimeter stands for ten meters.
If a path measures three centimeters on this map, it represents thirty meters. A different map may use a different scale. Always read the key and scale before comparing distances. A straight line between two places may be shorter than the path people actually walk.
