Grade 1: Multi-Step Mixed Challenges
These original challenges combine several skills in one story. Record intermediate results, include units, draw a model or route when useful, and check the final result. Teachers can reveal answers using the existing hidden-answer controls.
Classroom delivery
A trolley starts with 8 books. At Room A, collect 5 books. At Room B, leave 4 books. At Room C, collect 3 books. Finally put 2 books on each of 4 desks.
- How many books are on the trolley after each room?
- How many books go onto the desks? Draw the equal groups.
- How many books stay on the trolley?
- Can you put those remaining books in pairs without a leftover?
- If one more book arrives, how does your pairing change?
The walking trail
Draw a horizontal number line from 0 to 20. A child starts at marker 3, walks 5 spaces right, 2 spaces left, and 4 spaces right. Each space represents one step.
- Mark the position after each move.
- How many steps did the child walk altogether?
- How many spaces is the child from the starting point?
- Walk straight back to marker 3. How many steps are needed?
- Explain why total steps walked and distance from the start differ.
