The Good Shepherd
Jesus used the example of a shepherd to explain His love and care for people. In those days, shepherds worked very hard. They searched for grass and water, protected sheep from danger, and rescued them when they became trapped.
Jesus said that He is the Good Shepherd. Unlike a hired worker who might run away when danger comes, a true shepherd stays with the sheep and protects them. Jesus explained that He knows His sheep, and they know His voice.
Jesus also said that He would give His life for His sheep. He came not only for the people of Israel but for people everywhere. He wanted all who trust Him to become one flock under one Shepherd.
