The Rich Man and the Beggar
Jesus told a story to teach that the choices people make in this life matter. There was a rich man who enjoyed luxury every day. Outside his gate sat a poor beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing for scraps of food from the rich mans table.
Eventually, Lazarus died and was carried to a place of comfort with Abraham. The rich man also died, but he found himself in great suffering. Looking across a great distance, he saw Lazarus and begged for relief.
Abraham explained that during life, the rich man had enjoyed many blessings while Lazarus had suffered. Now their situations were reversed. Abraham also said that a great divide separated them, making it impossible to cross from one side to the other.
Jesus used this story to remind people to listen to God now, because after death there is no second chance to change their hearts.
