The Centurion's Slave

The Centurion's Slave

While Jesus was in Capernaum, some Jewish leaders asked Him to help a Roman centurion. They explained that the officer respected the Jewish people and had even helped build their synagogue. One of his servants was very sick and suffering greatly.

Jesus agreed to help and started toward the centurions home. However, the officer humbly sent a message saying that Jesus did not need to come to his house. He believed that Jesus had such authority that He only needed to speak a command and the servant would be healed.

The centurion explained that he understood authority because he gave orders to soldiers and servants every day. If he told someone to go, they went. If he told them to come, they came. In the same way, he trusted that Jesus command alone could heal.

Jesus was amazed by the centurions faith. He said that He had not found such great faith even among many people in Israel. Jesus told the centurion to go home, and just as he believed, the servant was healed.
