The Promise of a Child
More than 400 years had passed since the Jews had been ruled by Greeks, Persians, and then Romans. They longed for God's promised king to save Israel. The temple priests in Jerusalem were divided into 24 groups, with lots drawn to select the priest who would burn incense at the altar inside the temple.
A priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old and childless. One day, Zechariah burned the incense and prayed for the promised king. Suddenly, a bright light pierced the smoke, and an angel appeared, frightening Zechariah. The angel said a son would be born to them, to be named John. Gabriel was the angels name, and he said John would be great like Elijah and bring people back to God. Zechariah could not speak afterward, but wrote Gabriels message to Elizabeth.
