The Writing on the Wall
After King Nebuchadnezzar died, his son Belshazzar became ruler of Babylon. One evening, he held a great feast for his nobles and ordered the gold and silver cups taken from God's temple in Jerusalem to be brought out. The king and his guests drank wine from these sacred vessels while praising false gods.
Suddenly, a mysterious hand appeared and wrote words on the palace wall. Belshazzar was terrified. He called for his wise men to explain the writing, but none of them could understand its meaning. Finally, Daniel was brought before the king.
Daniel reminded Belshazzar that God had humbled Nebuchadnezzar when he became proud. Yet Belshazzar had ignored this lesson and dishonored God by using the holy temple cups. Daniel explained that the writing was God's judgment. Babylons kingdom would be taken away and divided among the Medes and Persians.
Although Belshazzar rewarded Daniel, the prophecy was fulfilled that very night. The Medes and Persians conquered Babylon, Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede became king.
