Jonah and the Whale

Jonah and the Whale

The city of Nineveh was filled with wickedness, and God wanted its people to repent. He chose Jonah, the son of Amittai, to deliver a warning message. Jonah did not want Nineveh to receive mercy because the Assyrians were enemies of Israel, so he tried to run away instead of obeying God.

Jonah boarded a ship and sailed in the opposite direction. While at sea, a violent storm threatened to destroy the ship. The sailors became frightened and searched for the cause of the disaster. Jonah admitted that he was fleeing from God and told the sailors to throw him into the sea.

Reluctantly, the sailors obeyed. Immediately the storm stopped and the sea became calm. God then provided a great fish to swallow Jonah. Inside the fish, Jonah prayed and asked God for mercy.

After three days and three nights, God commanded the fish to release Jonah onto dry land. Jonah then traveled to Nineveh and delivered God's warning. The people repented, turned away from their sins, and God spared the city from destruction.
