The Chariot of Fire
When the time came for Elijah to leave this world, he traveled from place to place under God's direction. Elijah invited Elisha to remain behind at different locations, including Bethel and Jericho, but Elisha refused to leave his teacher. He faithfully stayed by Elijah's side and followed him all the way to the Jordan River.
When they reached the river, Elijah took off his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the water. Immediately, the Jordan River divided, creating a dry path. Elijah and Elisha crossed to the other side together.
After crossing, Elijah asked Elisha what gift he desired before he departed. Elisha requested a double portion of Elijah's spirit so that he could become a powerful prophet and continue God's work. Elijah replied that this difficult request would be granted only if Elisha witnessed his departure.
Suddenly, a chariot of fire with horses of fire appeared between them. Elijah was taken up into heaven in a whirlwind. His cloak fell to the ground. Elisha picked up the cloak and returned to the Jordan River. When he struck the water with it, the river parted once more. Those who saw this miracle recognized that God's Spirit had passed from Elijah to Elisha.
