The Prophet Elijah
King Ahab was one of the most wicked kings in Israel. Together with his wife Jezebel, he encouraged people to worship false gods and opposed those who remained faithful to the Lord. God sent the prophet Elijah to warn Ahab that a severe drought and famine would come upon the land because of the nations sin.
After delivering God's message, Elijah left and traveled to a brook east of the Jordan River. There, God cared for him in a miraculous way. Ravens brought him food each morning and evening, and he drank water from the brook.
When the brook eventually dried up because of the drought, God directed Elijah to the town of Zarephath. There he met a widow gathering sticks for a fire. She explained that she had only a small amount of flour and oil left and planned to prepare a final meal for herself and her son before they starved.
Elijah asked her to share her food with him and promised that God would provide for her. The widow trusted God's word and obeyed. As a result, the flour and oil never ran out during the famine. God faithfully supplied everything the widow, her son, and Elijah needed.
