The Wise King Solomon
As King David grew old and prepared to die, he appointed his son Solomon to become the next king of Israel. David encouraged Solomon to remain faithful to God, obey His commands, and walk in His ways. After giving this advice, David died, and Solomon began his reign.
One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and invited him to ask for whatever he desired. Solomon did not ask for wealth, power, or a long life. Instead, he humbly admitted that he was young and inexperienced and asked God for wisdom to lead the people well and to know the difference between right and wrong.
God was pleased with Solomon's request. Because Solomon had asked for wisdom rather than selfish rewards, God granted him extraordinary wisdom. God also promised him riches, honor, and glory greater than any other king of his time. God added that if Solomon remained obedient, he would also enjoy a long life.
Under Solomon's leadership, Israel became wealthy, peaceful, and powerful. His wisdom became famous throughout the world, and many rulers traveled long distances to hear his advice and learn from him.
