How God Helped Gideon Defeat the Midianites
After Joshua died, the Israelites slowly turned away from God and began worshiping false gods. Because of their disobedience, the Midianites became powerful and oppressed them for many years. The Israelites hid in caves and mountains and cried out to God for help.
One day, Gideon, the son of Joash, was secretly threshing wheat when an angel appeared to him. The angel told Gideon that God had chosen him to rescue Israel from the Midianites. Although Gideon felt weak and unimportant, he trusted God's promise.
Gideon obeyed God by tearing down an altar dedicated to Baal and building an altar to the Lord. Some people wanted to punish him, but his father Joash defended him, saying that if Baal were truly a god, he could defend himself.
Later, Gideon gathered an army. God reduced the number of soldiers so that Israel would know the victory came from Him. After testing the men at a stream, only 300 soldiers remained. Gideon and his men carried torches, jars, and trumpets. When they surrounded the Midianite camp and shouted, the Midianites became confused and turned against one another. The enemy fled, and God gave Gideon a great victory.
