When God Rained Manna
After crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites traveled through the wilderness. Soon they became hungry and began complaining to Moses. They remembered the food they had eaten in Egypt and feared they would starve in the desert.
Moses prayed to God, and God promised to provide food from heaven. That evening, large numbers of quail flew into the camp, giving the people meat to eat. The next morning, a thin layer of food covered the ground. This food was called manna. God instructed the Israelites to gather only enough manna for each day so they would learn to trust Him.
Later, when the Israelites camped at Rephidim, they became thirsty and complained again. God told Moses to strike a rock with his staff. When Moses obeyed, water flowed from the rock, and the people drank.
On another occasion, God instructed Moses to speak to a rock so that water would come out. Instead, Moses struck the rock twice. Although water flowed out, Moses had not obeyed God's instruction completely. Because of this disobedience, God told Moses and Aaron that they would not enter the Promised Land.
