The Birth of Moses, the Greatest Prophet
The descendants of Jacob and Joseph, known as the Hebrews or Israelites, had become very numerous in Egypt. A new Pharaoh became afraid of their growing population and treated them harshly as slaves. He even ordered that all newborn Hebrew boys should be killed.
A Hebrew woman named Jochebed gave birth to a baby boy and hid him for three months. When she could no longer keep him hidden, she placed him in a basket made of reeds and set it among the plants along the riverbank.
Pharaohs daughter came to the river to bathe and discovered the basket. When she opened it, she saw the crying baby and felt compassion for him. She realized he was a Hebrew child.
The babys sister, Miriam, had been watching nearby. She offered to find a Hebrew woman to care for the baby. Pharaohs daughter agreed, and the babys own mother was chosen to nurse him and was even paid for her work.
When the child grew older, Pharaohs daughter adopted him as her son and named him Moses, which means "drawn out," because she drew him out of the water.
