Jesus Before the Jewish Council and Pilate
Jesus was taken before the Jewish Council, where leaders tried to find evidence against Him. After many false attempts, the high priest asked directly if Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus answered, “I am.”
The council declared Him guilty and said He deserved death. However, they could not legally execute Him under Roman law, so they sent Him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
Pilate questioned Jesus and found no fault in Him. Still, the crowd, influenced by the religious leaders, shouted for Jesus to be crucified and demanded Barabbas, a criminal, to be released instead.
Fearing a riot and political consequences, Pilate gave in to the crowd’s demand and handed Jesus over to be crucified.
