The Special Life-Work of Jesus
Mary knew that Jesus understood God was His Father, but she still waited to see how her sons special mission would unfold. When Jesus grew older, He went to John, who had been baptizing many people in the Jordan River. Jesus asked John to baptize Him too.
At first, John refused because he knew Jesus was greater than he was. But Jesus insisted, and John obeyed. As Jesus came up from the water, John saw the Holy Spirit come down like a dove and rest on Jesus. Then God's voice spoke, saying that He was pleased with His Son. John understood that Jesus was the promised King.
After this, Jesus knew that His ordinary work as a carpenter was finished and that His public mission was beginning. Led by the Holy Spirit, He went into the desert to pray and prepare. There was no food there, and wild animals were nearby.
Jesus also understood that He would not be an earthly king with a palace, riches, fine clothes, or servants. Instead, He would live humbly, serve others, suffer greatly, and give His life to save people.
