The Shepherds and the Three Wise Men
On the night Jesus was born, shepherds were watching their flocks near Bethlehem. Suddenly, a brilliant light filled the sky, and an angel appeared. The angel announced that the Savior had been born and could be found lying in a manger. Soon, many angels joined together, praising God. After the angels disappeared, the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus exactly as they had been told.
Far away, wise men studied the stars and knew of prophecies about a great king who would come to the Jews. When they saw a remarkable star, they followed it toward Jerusalem, bringing valuable gifts. King Herod heard about their search and became worried that a new king might threaten his throne.
Herod asked religious leaders where the promised Messiah would be born. They explained that the Scriptures pointed to Bethlehem. Herod sent the wise men there and asked them to report back after finding the child.
By the time the wise men arrived, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were living in a simple house. The wise men worshiped Jesus and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. That night, God warned them in a dream not to return to Herod, so they traveled home by a different route.
