God's Command to Elijah
After Elijah's victory on Mount Carmel, Queen Jezebel became furious when she learned that the prophets of Baal had been defeated. She sent a message threatening to kill Elijah. Fearing for his life, Elijah fled into the wilderness and traveled for many days until he reached Mount Sinai.
There, God spoke to Elijah and asked why he had come. Elijah explained that the Israelites had turned away from God, destroyed His altars, and killed many of His prophets. Elijah believed he was the only faithful prophet remaining.
God reassured Elijah that he was not alone and gave him important instructions. Elijah was told to travel to Damascus and anoint Hazael as king of Aram. He was also instructed to anoint Jehu as king of Israel and to appoint Elisha, the son of Shaphat, as the prophet who would succeed him.
As Elijah continued his journey, he found Elisha plowing a field with oxen. Elijah placed his cloak on Elishas shoulders, a sign that God had chosen him. Elisha left his work behind and followed Elijah, beginning his training as God's prophet.
