David - A Threat to Saul

David - A Threat to Saul

As David became more successful in battle, King Saul grew jealous and fearful. Saul knew David was a brave warrior and a capable leader. Jonathan, Sauls son, became David's closest friend and remained loyal to him. Although Saul first planned for David to marry his daughter Merab, David eventually married Sauls younger daughter, Michal.

Saul repeatedly tried to kill David, forcing him to flee and hide in different places. Even though Saul hunted him across the land, David refused to harm the king because Saul had been chosen by God.

On one occasion, David secretly entered Sauls camp at night. Saul was asleep, and David could easily have killed him. Instead, David took Sauls spear and water jug and left peacefully. The next day, David showed these items to Saul as proof that he had spared the kings life.

Saul realized David had shown mercy and became remorseful. The two men promised not to harm one another and then went their separate ways. Later, the Philistines defeated Israel in battle. Saul and his armor-bearer died after falling upon their own swords.
