The Prophet Samuel
Elkanah was an Israelite who had two wives, Hannah and Penninah. Hannah was deeply saddened because she had no children. One day she went to the holy place at Shiloh and prayed earnestly to God. She promised that if God gave her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lords service.
While Hannah prayed, the priest Eli saw her moving her lips silently and mistakenly thought she was drunk. After Hannah explained her sorrow, Eli blessed her and prayed that God would answer her request. Soon afterward, Hannah gave birth to a son and named him Samuel.
When Samuel was still young, Hannah brought him to Eli so he could serve God at the holy place. One night, Samuel heard someone call his name. Thinking Eli had called him, he ran to the priest. This happened three times.
Eli then realized that God was speaking to Samuel. He told Samuel to answer, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." God gave Samuel a message about His judgment on Elis family because of their wrongdoing. Samuel faithfully delivered the message and later became one of Israels greatest prophets.
