The Child Who Learned to Tell the Simple Truth

Sometimes, it’s easier to make a story sound bigger and brighter than it really is—but one little child learns that the truth shines on its own.

The Big Fish Story

Every day, Milo loved to tell stories. He’d say he caught a fish as big as his arm, or that he jumped over three fences in one hop! His friends listened wide-eyed, even though they weren’t sure if it was true. Milo liked how everyone looked at him with amazement. But one day, things changed.

The Torn Kite

One windy afternoon, Milo ran to his friends shouting, “My kite flew higher than the clouds!” They gasped, but when they saw the kite stuck in a tree, torn and tangled, they started to giggle. Milo’s face turned red. “Maybe not that high,” he mumbled. It was the first time he felt that his words might not match the truth.

The Lost Puppy

Later that week, a small puppy wandered into Milo’s yard. Milo ran to tell everyone, “It’s a wild wolf! I tamed it!” But when the puppy barked and wagged its tail, everyone laughed again. “It’s just a puppy, Milo!” said Emma kindly. Milo sighed. “I just wanted it to sound exciting,” he admitted.

The Honest Apple

At school, the teacher asked who had eaten the apple from her desk. Milo almost said, “A bird flew in and grabbed it!” but he stopped himself. “It was me,” he said quietly. The teacher smiled. “Thank you for being honest.” Milo was surprised—no one laughed, and he felt lighter than ever before.

The Real Story

From that day on, Milo told stories that were true, even if they were small. He learned that the truth didn’t need to be decorated—it was already strong. His friends still listened, and now they trusted every word he said. Milo realized that being believed felt even better than being admired.
