The Girl Who Learns Not to Give Up

The Girl Who Learns Not to Give Up

A story about determination and hope.

Ages 5-8

The First Splash

Lily stood at the edge of the pool, her heart beating fast. The water looked deep and cool. She wanted to jump in, but she was afraid of the cold. Her friend Mia gave her a reassuring smile. "You'll do it," she whispered, but Lily was still nervous.

The Big Drop

When Lily finally stepped onto the poolside ledge, her legs trembled. The water seemed to wait for her. She took a deep breath, counting to three. At "one", she dipped her feet. The splash startled her, and she flapped her arms wildly. The current pulled her a little, but she stayed afloat.

The First Failure

Lily tried again the next day. She swam to the center of the pool, but she felt tired. The water felt like it was pulling her back. Her breath grew short, and she started to flinch. Her teacher, Mr. Kim, said, "Just keep pumping your arms." Lily felt embarrassed and walked back to the poolside.

The Whisper of Hope

That evening Lily drew a picture of a golden sun and a girl swimming. The sun was bright and she imagined herself reaching the far side of the pool. "Maybe tomorrow I'll do better," she whispered to her sketch. The next morning she felt a little stronger inside.

Perseverance Takes Root

Lily returned to the pool every day after school. Each time she practiced her breathing, her arms, and her kick. Though she still made mistakes, she remembered Mia’s smile and Mr. Kim's encouragement. One rainy afternoon she swam farther than she had ever swum before. She felt a burst of pride.

The Triumphant Splash

Finally, Lily paddled all the way to the far side of the pool. The water kissed her cheek as she stepped out. Her classmates clapped and cheered. Lily realized that giving up was never her choice. In the mirror, she saw a brave girl who never stopped trying.
