On the second shelf, Tommy found a golden glove that sparkled when the sun hit it. The glove was part of a long-lost machine that could turn wind into sugar. When Tommy slipped it on, the wind in the library seemed to swirl in slow motion. He could feel the sugar crystals humming in his mind. Further down, a folded map lay between two atlases, its parchment curling in the breeze. The map was inked with strange symbols and a route to the "Celestial Staircase". A tiny figure on the map drew a trail that glowed like a silver river. Tommy traced the glow with his finger, feeling the story of the stars guide him. The library's silence turned to chatter from the unseen creatures watching him.

In a corner, a brass compass ticked by itself, its needle spinning toward the right. Tommy reached out and found it was pointing to a hidden compartment behind the last shelf. A massive telescope, its copper tubes rusted in places, stood at the far end of the hall. Its lens had a silver rim that reflected the moonlight that poured through a skylight. Tommy used his new gloves and the compass to adjust the telescope's angle, gazing into distant galaxies. He saw a small blue planet that seemed reachable. The library's walls breathed with the excitement of a child discovering space.

As night fell, the library opened its vault, revealing a stair that slid into the sky. Tommy climbed the stairs, feeling his heart beat faster with every step. He imagined he could bring forgotten inventions back to the world and let them fly like birds. When he finally reached the top, stars welcomed him, and the library shivered with joy.
