Lily was walking home through the darkened garden after her bedtime story. Her lantern flickered, but something twinkled far above her. She bent down and saw the shy firefly, its glow dimming like a sad candle. Lily whispered, "What happened, little light?" and gently cupped the fragile insect with her palm. The scene filled her with wonder and a strong desire to help.
As Lily held the firefly close, the insect shivered and did not shine. The girl noticed that its wings were trembling, like a butterfly feeling cold. She decided that they would need a warm place and decided to bring it back to her bedroom. Lily wrapped the firefly in a soft cotton cloth she found in her drawer. That night, Lily dreamed that the firefly would find its light again.
When Lily looked at the firefly, she realized that its light had indeed faded. She gently touched its shell and felt its tiny heart beating slower. She opened her notebook to write a plan: “First, keep the firefly warm; second, find something that sparkles back.” Lily was determined to restore the glow. She whispered to the firefly about hope and friendship.
On the second morning, Lily ran to the oak tree where the wise old owl lived. She asked the owl, “Please help me bring back my friend’s light.” The owl peered through his spectacles and nodded, “Child, light comes from the dew that collects on the leaves. Let’s find a drop.” Lily followed the owl to the meadow, and together they collected dew in their tiny hands.
The dew sparkle looked like a bead of crystal under the sun. Lily carefully pressed a single drop onto the firefly’s back. The insect twitched and, suddenly, a bright spark lit up its body, glowing like a miniature lantern. The firefly flew up and danced among the stars, shedding its bright light across the garden. Lily and the owl applauded and felt the magic of the night.
After that night, the firefly’s light stayed strong. It flew through the meadow, across the brook, and even along the path where Lily would walk to school. All the forest creatures gathered to celebrate, dancing under the moonlit night. Lily promised to keep a lantern open for the firefly whenever it felt lonely. The firefly sang a happy tune about the stars, and its glow never faded again.
