The Backpack That Complains

The Backpack That Complains

A playful and gentle adventure about a backpack with a voice.

5-7

Chapter 1

Jenna was rushing to school one bright Saturday morning. She noticed a bright red backpack sitting at the bottom of her closet. It had a little flag on its flap that read "Please Listen!" Jenna was curious. She opened the backpack, expecting maybe some old clothes. Instead, the backpack burst with a gentle sigh and said, "I am tired of carrying all the books all day."

Chapter 2

Jenna laughed softly. "You can talk, you can talk," she replied. The backpack explained that its pockets felt cramped with pencils, books, and lunch boxes. It pleaded that perhaps someone could help it lighten the load. Jenna thought about her little brother, Max, who could carry some of the heavier items.

Chapter 3

They decided to move the heavier books to Max's backpack. The red backpack felt lighter for the first time. It thanked Jenna and Max with a warm, relieved sigh. Then the backpack asked, "Will you let me bring a snack to share?"

Chapter 4

Jenna nodded eagerly. They packed the backpack with a yummy sandwich and a piece of fruit. The backpack felt joyful for the first time, laughing a little with each bite. It told them that a shared lunch made all the difference.

Chapter 5

On the way to school, the trio walked together. The backpack carried their books, music sheets, and a small sketch pad. It walked with a little hop, as if in rhythm with the beat of their own hearts. Jenna felt a warm sense of friendship.

Chapter 6

At recess, the backpack stood proud among the other lunch boxes. It told its friends that everyone had a different role and that even a backpack could make a difference. The backpack was praised for its courage to speak up. After school, Jenna, Max, and the friendly backpack made a pact: always check in with one another and no burdens will be held alone.
